From ‘French women quarrelling violently in the market’ in Limoges, through the fairy-tale ‘Hut on foul legs’ to the ‘Great Gate of Kiev’ – Modeste Mussorgsky takes his listeners on a unique journey. Our guide is Victor Hartmann, painter and architect, and friend of the composer.
His abstract drawings comprise a thematic matrix for the ‘Pictures at an exhibition’. Every title picture is introduced by a so-called Promenade, a musical linker. Maurice Ravel's arrangement is the most recorded and performed, however, the pieces were initially written for a solo piano.
In this concert, Paweł Maślanka, the first concertmaster of the Szczecin Philharmonic Symphony Orchestra will perform as a soloist. He has won numerous national violin competitions, and cooperated with Sinfonia Varsovia. He’s been on numerous tournées at music festivals both in Poland and abroad performing with such artists as Nigel Kennedy, Ivo Pogorelich, Martha Argerich and Anna-Sophie Mutter. The orchestra and the soloist will be conducted by Rune Bergmann, artistic director of the Philharmonic in Szczecin.
