Linus Roth plays Weinberg

Born in pre-war Warsaw, he was to become an outstanding Chopinist. A scholarship was awaiting him in Philadelphia, but the Americans didn't grant him a visa due to his Jewish background. He fled to Moscow which saved his life. He became a protege of Dmitri Shostakovich.

Today the young German violinist Linus Roth will familiarise Polish listeners with forgotten compositions by Mieczysław Weinberg, a composer of a triple personality. A decade ago, this violinist was announced as one of the most interesting musicians of his generation and an advocate of unjustly forgotten composers. His performances, along with a unique musical project being about recording all Weinberg's sonatas for violin and piano, were appreciated both by audiences and critics.

Last year Roth set up the International Mieczysław Weinberg Society whose aim is to popularise the persona and artistic output of this Polish composer. Weinberg's piece had to be included in the repertoire of the concert at the Philharmonic in Szczecin, where we will hear “Concerto for violin and orchestra” performed on an original “ Stradivarius from 1703.
