Even Carl Philipp Emanuel, son of Johann Sebastian, noted: The six harpsichord trios [BWV 1014-1019] belong to the finest works of my dear deceased father. They still sound excellent and bring me great joy, even though they were composed more than fifty years earlier.
The Suite BWV 1008 is part of a cycle of six cello suites written during Bach's service for the prince in Köthen. As a Kapellmeister, he placed great emphasis on the regular and orderly work of the musicians under his direction. Their repertoire had to include many instrumental pieces for various ensembles, including solo works. On the other hand, the Sonata in G major BWV 1021 is a slightly later work, as it was composed by Bach for the Ordinarie Concerten, a regular student concert series in Leipzig.
A multitude of instrumental works of various types for different instruments – although in Bach's obituary, this part of his oeuvre was summarised succinctly, each piece is truly unique.
